The United States of Mexico covers nearly 2 million square kilometers with 31 federal states plus Mexico City. Nearly two thirds of the country is mountainous, ranging in height from 1,000 to over 5,000 meters. This endows the country with a wide range of climates and ecological areas but mostly moderate. However, we suggest that travel to the south (Yucatan and Chiapas) be done in the winter (November to February) due to the extreme heat and humidity. The rainy season throughout Mexico is from May to October but it usually rains in the afternoon – evening.
